Working On-Campus
All degree-seeking international students in the U.S. on F-1 and J-1 visas are allowed to work on-campus without any authorization from USCIS. However, you need documentation from your hiring department. The hourly limit for employment through scholarships and assistantships is 20 hours per week when classes are in session. When classes are not in session, the limit is 40 hours per week.
During the summer semester, international students are allowed to work no more than 20 hours per week if enrolled in classes. If not enrolled in classes, they may work up to 30 hours per week. Students can only hold one on-campus job at a time.

Working Off-Campus
International students are allowed to work off-campus under three categories, Curricular Practical Training (CPT), Optional Practical Training, OPT, or Economic Hardship. CPT requires authorization from the Office of International Affairs, while OPT (work authorization after graduation or completion of coursework), and Economic Hardship both require authorization from USCIS.
